Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis./Missouri) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of April 12-18.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Pell, a sophomore at the Univ. of Missouri, won a gold medal at the University Freestyle National Championships in Evanston, Ill. last weekend.
Competing at 74 kg/163 lbs., more than 20 pounds less than his college weight class, Pell won seven matches on his way to the title.
In the finals, Pell defeated 2004 NCAA champion Matt Gentry of Stanford, 8-2, 4-2. In the semifinals, he downed 2005 NCAA All-American Trent Paulson of Iowa State, 6-0, 2-3, 4-1.
Pell did not surrender a single point in any of his other five matches, recording two falls in those wins.
At the 2005 NCAA Tournament, Pell placed seventh at 184 lbs. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2004.
He is a Psychology major with a minor in Sociology.
