Return Of All-American 133-Pounder And Addition Of 197-Pound Standout Has Coach John Azevedo’s Team Back on Track

Finally, some good news for the Cal Poly wrestling program.
Darrell Vasquez is back in school and training, and Matt Monteiro, a former standout 197-pounder at Cal State-Bakersfield, has transferred to Cal Poly and is enrolled in classes for the spring semester.
Only a few weeks after completing a disappointing season that seemed to have coach John Azevedo’s team battling injuries and illness more than actual opponents on the mat, the Mustangs have officially closed the book on last year, and are ready to move ahead and write a new chapter in Cal Poly wrestling history.
The return of Vasquez, and the arrival of Monteiro is a good start for a team that finished 25th in the NCAA tournament and fifth in the Pac 10. The Mustangs began the season ranked 15th in the country by The Wrestling Mall, and were picked by many to win the Pac-10 title.
But Vasquez, a 2004 All-American who was ranked No. 1 in the nation in a loaded 133 pound weight class in The Wrestling Mall’s preseason poll, missed the 2004-05 season because of the effects of Epstein-Barr Virus, an infectious form of mononucleosis.
