Iowa Loses At Illinois, 25-7
Hawkeyes will wrestle at Northwestern Saturday night
CHAMPAIGN, IL – The University of Iowa wrestling team lost its first Big Ten dual of the season, dropping a 25-7 decision to Illinois Friday night in Champaign, IL. The Fighting Illini (11-1, 2-0 in the Big Ten) won eight matches in the dual and set a new school attendance record of 3,573. The Hawkeyes (6-3, 1-1 in the Big Ten) missed opportunities throughout the dual, losing six of the eight matches by three points or less.
Winning matches for Iowa were redshirt freshman Mark Perry and true freshman Matt Fields. Perry recorded one of the two major decisions in the dual, defeating Illinois’ Cal Ferry, 12-2, at 165 pounds. Perry improved 15-2 in collegiate competition and 7-1 in dual matches with the win. Fields scored a 6-3 decision over Mike Behnke at heavyweight, improving to 15-4 in collegiate competition and 8-1 in dual matches.
The Hawkeyes will face Northwestern (8-1, 1-1 in the Big Ten) Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Evanston, IL. The dual will be held in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
