Everything’s Not Jake For Percival; Jayne Gets Revenge

Downhearted Jake:

Although he became a rare four-time All-American, Ohio University senior 157-pounder Jake Percival wasn’t overly pleased that he pinned Iowa State’s Trent Paulson to finish third in the NCAA Championships in St. Louis earlier this month.

“Because it was my last college match, I thought it would be nice to win, and even better if I got a pin, “Percival said. “It was fun to be out there . . . it was the least nervous I’ve been for a match in a long time.

“Maybe 10 years from now it’ll be a bigger deal to me to have been a four-time All-American. It doesn’t mean much now because I had a lot higher goal in mind.”

“Ten years from now? “Ohio University coach Joel Greenlee said as he glared at Percival. “Try two weeks from now. You don’t know what an accomplishment it is to be a four-time All-American.”

Revenge:

Illinois senior Mark Jayne (133), a three-time state champ at St. Edward, got a takedown in the final 28 seconds to beat Pittsburgh sophomore Drew Headlee for seventh place. It wasn’t the title round match Jayne had been hoping for, but at least he gained revenge since Headlee upset him in the second round, 14-11.
