John Smith was named Big 12 Wrestling Coach of the Year as it was voted on by the conference coaches and announced today by the conference office.
It is the sixth time Smith has been honored as the coach of the year since the Big 12 was formed in 1997.
The Cowboys enjoyed one of the most dominant seasons in school history. OSU tied a school record by crowning seven individual conference champions and scored 95.5 points at the conference meet, runner-up Iowa State finished with 49 points.
The success carried over to the NCAA Championships where OSU tied an NCAA record and set a school record with five individual champions. Oklahoma State also set school marks by scoring 153 team points and beating second-place Michigan by 70 points.
Smith coached heavyweight Steve Mocco to a perfect 37-0 record and became Smith’s first Dan Hodge Trophy winner.
The national championship was the fourth in Smith’s coaching career, and his third consecutive title. The 33 championships are the most ever by any school in one sport. Smith now has a career record of 220-25-3 in his 14 seasons at the school.
