Missouri Wrestling Team Signs Six

…Tigers Ink Wrestlers for 2005-06 Season…

Columbia, Mo. — Missouri Wrestling Head Coach Brian Smith announced the names of six student-athletes that have signed with the Tigers for the upcoming 2005-06 school year. Dane Espinosa, Nathan Hewitt and Brian Sanguinet are all Missouri natives, while Dirk Hurrin and Johnny Olanowski currently reside in Virginia.

A wrestler at Neosho High School, Dane Espinosa is strong both athletically and academically and will wrap his senior year as valedictorian of his class. Expected to wrestle at 149-pounds for Missouri, Espinosa finished as high as first at the Missouri State Championships (152-pounds) his senior year, tallying a 168-19 record in four seasons on the mat. A four-time Missouri Wrestling Association (MWA) Academic All-State honoree, Espinosa is a two-time District Wrestler of the Year and was named this year’s (MWA) Class 3 Wrestler of the Year.

Brian Sanguinet, a native of Wildwood, Mo., is expected to wrestle at 141-pounds for the Tigers. A senior at Lafayette High School, Sanguinet wrestled at 130-pounds for three years, finishing first at the Missouri State Championships in 2004. Competing at 140-pounds during his senior campaign, the four-time Most Outstanding Wrestler recorded a 49-1 record and finished second at the state championships and seventh at the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Senior Nationals, earning his first All-America honor. Sanguinet is a two-time St. Louis All-Metro first team honoree and four-time scholar athlete. In four years of wrestling, Sanguinet notched at 177-12 record.

The third wrestler signed to the 2005-06 class to come from Missouri is St. Charles local Nathan Hewitt. Hewitt finished as high as second his junior and senior year at the state high school wrestling championships and totaled 138 wins in four years. A four-time honor roll member, Hewitt was named to the All-State Academic team his junior and senior year.

Expected to wrestle at 174-pounds, Ryan Sonderegger is a senior at Shawnee Mission East High School and hails from Prairie Village, Kan. A two-time team captain and Most Outstanding Wrestler of his team, Sonderegger closed his high school career with a 135-23 record and claimed the Kansas 6A state title at 160-pounds in 2004 and 171-pounds in 2005. Sonderegger is a three-time Kansas Regional Champion and was named to the Kansas City Star All-Metro first team as a junior in 2004. Ryan is the son of former MU wrestling standout John Sonderegger, a 1984 Big Eight Champion and All-American.

Johnny Olanowski comes to MU with a long list of high school accolades. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Olanowski owns a 164-13 record and closed his senior season, 60-1. A two-time All-American, Olanowski finished second at 119-pounds his junior year and first as a senior at the 2005 Virginia State Championships. Olanowski will graduate from Kellam High School and is likely to wrestle at 125-pounds for Missouri.

Rounding out the 2005-06 Missouri wrestling class is Dirk Hurrin, a member of the St. Stephen’s St. Agnes High School wrestling team in Alexandria, Va., Hurrin wrestled at 160-pounds and is a four-time state champion of the Virginia Independent School Wrestling Association (WISWA) and Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC), earning Prep National All-America honors three times. Hurrin is projected to wrestle at 157-pounds.
