WR: Golden Gophers Announce Spring Signing Class
The University of Minnesota wrestling program has announced that Charles Lloyd and Chris McPhail have signed National Letters of Intent and will wrestle for the Golden Gophers beginning in the fall of 2005. In addition, Mitch Millner and Joel Messick have signed Acceptance of Admission forms and will join Minnesota as recruited walk-ons.
Lloyd was a 2004 National Junior College Champion at Lassen Community College in Susanville, Calif. A native of Chicago, he was a two-time state champion at Mt. Carmel High School, and was a three-time freestyle state champion. A four-year letterwinner as a prep, he finished his high school career with a 158-6 record. Lloyd is projected to wrestle at 141 pounds for the Golden Gophers.
McPhail was the 189-pound 2005 state champion out of Pine Island High School. He finished his senior season with a perfect 44-0 record. A qualifier for the last three state tournaments, McPhail posted a sixth-place finish in 2003. He is projected to wrestle at 197 pounds for the Golden Gophers.
Millner was a two-time state champion at 145 pounds out of Simley High School. He also claimed a third-place finish in 2003 and a fourth-place finish in 2002. Millner helped lead Simley to runner-up finishes in 2003 and ’05, and a third-place finish in 2002. He finished his senior season with a 39-2 record and his career with a 174-42 record. Millner is projected to wrestle at 157 pounds for the Golden Gophers.
Messick was a state runner-up at 130 pounds out of Cameron High School in Cameron, Wis. He was a two-time all-conference selection as a prep. Messick is projected to wrestle at 141 pounds for the Golden Gophers.
The quartet joins Minnesota’s fall recruiting class which featured Dustin Schlatter, a four- time Ohio state champion, Nate Matousek, a three-time Minnesota state champion, and Jayson Ness, a two-time Minnesota state champion.
