University World Team, FILA Jr World Team Results

U.S. University World Team and FILA Junior World Team determined from trials events held at Olympic Training Center;

Mango makes teams on both levels; Cejudo brothers make FILA Junior freestyle team

The U.S. World Team members on the University and FILA Junior levels were determined in their respected trials event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 28.

The best of three Championship Series in each weight class, in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling, were held with the winner earning the team position.

The 2005 University World Team Trials determined who will represent the U.S. at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, August 1-7.

The FILA Junior World Team Trials determined who will represent the U.S. at the FILA Junior World Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania, July 5-10.

Spenser Mango (Flourissant, Mo./USOEC/Gator WC) earned a spot at 55 kg/121 lbs. on both the University World Team and the FILA Junior World Team.

In the University finals series, Mango defeated Ricardo Osorio (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) in two straight matches. Mango won bout one, 7-0, 2-0 and came back to win bout two, 2-3, 6-0, 4-0.

In the FILA Junior finals series, Mango also won in two straight matches, stopping Ryan Hall (Woodford, Va./USMC), 6-0, 7-0 in match one, and 1-0, 6-0 in match two.

A pair of brothers earned spots on the FILA Junior Freestyle World Team.

At 55 kg/121 lbs., Henry Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) earned the team spot with a two match win over Paul Donahoe (Davison, Mich./UNL Wrestling). In the first match Henry Cejudo won by in in the third period. Cejudo won the second matches, 1-2, 5-4, 5-3. Henry Cejudo was a Colorado high school state champion at Coronado High School this year.
Cejudo wins series, two matches to none

At 60 kg/132 lbs., Angel Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) beat Drew Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Pitt WC). In bout one, Cejudo won by pin in 1:58. In the second bout, Cejudo won 3-0, 1-0. Cejudo is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete.

The University World Greco-Roman Team features two athletes who were also 2005 U.S. Senior Nationals champions: Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio/USOEC/Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Justin Ruiz (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Both won their Championship Series in two straight matches.

The University World Freestyle Team featured two athletes who were NCAA Div. I champions in 2005, Chris Pendleton (San Jose, Calif./Gator WC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Steve Mocco (N. Bergen, N.J./New York AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Pendleton was a two-time NCAA champion for Oklahoma State. Mocco won the 2005 NCAA title for Oklahoma State and 2003 NCAA title for the Univ. of Iowa.

Pendleton defeated Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis./Sunkist Kids) in the Championship Series in two straight matches. Pendleton won the first match, 3-0, 1-0 and took the second match, 6-0, 3-5, 3-0. It was a rematch of the last two NCAA Div. I championship matches at 184 pounds, both won by Pendleton.

Mocco beat Israel Silva (Marysville, Wash./Chattanooga) in two straight bouts. Mocco pinned Silva in the second period in bout one, then won the second match, 2-0, 2-0.

Two of the University Freestyle World Team members are post-graduates, but were NCAA champions when they were in college: Jesse Jantzen (Cambridge, Mass./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Jantzen won his NCAA title for Harvard, while Rowlands was a two-time NCAA champion for Ohio State.

All of the winners won two matches from their opponents. In most cases, the series were completed in two straight matches. A total of seven matches went the full three periods.
