Local report: Scotts Valley wrestling team’s win taken back
SENTINEL staff report
Scotts Valley High’s banner wrestling season has a little asterisk.
The Falcons, who entered this season with one dual meet victory in school history, earned their third this year after thumping visiting Soquel 57-19 on Wednesday night ” sort of.
“It’s a little complicated right now, “Falcons coach Greg Stevens said when asked his team’s record.
The Falcons beat host San Lorenzo Valley 37-29 last week but had to forfeit two matches ” both won by Scotts Valley ” because the entrants, Paddy McFall and Chris Ramirez, violated CIF rules by competing two weight classes high than their regular weight class.
The maximum a wrestler can jump is one weight class. That said, SLV was credited with the dual meet victory.
“I was unaware of the rule, and it’s totally my fault, “Stevens said.
Also in question is Scotts Valley’s tie at Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League power Watsonville.
No ties are allowed, which means Stevens will meet with Watsonville coaches since the Wildcatz hold the official book. The programs will comb through a set CIF criterion to decide a winner. Some elements of the criterion include match wins, most pins and most major decisions. The schools were tied on all the aforementioned criterion.
“It’s going to come down to something like who won the first match, “Stevens said. “And I don’t have the official book.”
So, until that is squared away, Scotts Valley is 2-2-1* in league. Soon, it will be either 3-2 or 2-3, either way, not a clear indicator of the Falcons’ success in dual meets.
Cougars coach Ken Pollastrini checked with SCCAL commissioner Pat Lovell to clarify the rules concerning wrestling up weight classes. Finding Scotts Valley was in violation of the rule, his team was awarded a 41-25 win.
“It came out the right way, “Pollastrini said. “But they have a good team, no doubt.”
The Falcons’ lone senior, Brian Tansy, competing in his final home dual meet Wednesday, was one of seven falcons wrestlers to win by fall against Soquel.
Dane Stevens (103), Waseem Lutfi (112), Chase Kranich (119), Travis Stebbins (140), A.J. Corbella (160), Ramirez (back at 171 rather than heavyweight) and Dustin Black (215) also won win pins.
Dane Stevens, the coach’s son, pinned his opponent in 36 seconds, the fastest fall of the evening.
Scotts Valley also benefited from forfeits at three weight classes (130, 135 and heavyweight).
Soquel earned wins at 135, 145 and 189 pounds.
