John Roberts Attended High School In Northwest Indiana
(CBS) LAPORTE, Ind. President Bush’s Supreme Court nominee, John Roberts, has some strong local ties. He went to high school in northwest Indiana.
CBS 2’s Suzanne Le Mignot reports that it is a proud day for La Lumiere School in LaPorte.
“I’m excited and proud. I am proud that I taught him,” said Lawrence Sullivan, who is Roberts’ former math teacher.
Sullivan says while Roberts was a student at the school, you could see there was a promising future in store for the teen.
“He was someone who was involved in almost anything that he could be involved in on the campus,” Sullivan said.
Roberts was not only on the wrestling team the year he graduated in regard 1973, but also on the track team and voted most valuable defensive player on the football team. Roberts rounded out his athletic schedule by being a member of the executive and the academic committees.
“He loved history and economics and government. Those were his special interests. He had a very, very special interest in foreign language,” Sullivan said.
All of those loves led Roberts to be valedictorian of his graduating class. Schoolmate and lifelong friend, Bob MacLavery, remembers Roberts’ work ethic even at the age of 14.
“I think that is the legacy that he would leave if he were to be on a supreme court,” MacLavery said.
Roberts’ classmate also says if his friend is chosen he would inspire his fellow justices just as he did everyone here at school when he was here.
