Izmir, Turkey – Greco-Roman wrestler Justin Ruiz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Univ. of Nebraska/New York AC) placed fifth at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. on Wednesday night at the 2005 World University Games.
Ruiz lost to Robert Petrosyan of Armenia (2-0, 1-1) in the bronze-medal bout.
In each period, neither wrestler was able to score in the first minute. In the first period, Ruiz gave up a one-point gut wrench near the end of Petrosyan’s 30-second clinch period to fall behind 1-0. Ruiz was unable to turn Petrosyan in his 30-second clinch period.
In the second period, both wrestlers failed to turn their opponent in the 30-second clinch period. However, Petrosyan won the coin toss, meaning he scored the last point on a caution, winning the match.
Ruiz will ravel directly to Poland to compete in the Pytlasinski Tournament with the rest of the 2005 U.S. World Team.
Ruiz earned the spot in the bronze medal match after he defeated Valdas Sidlauskas of Lithuania (3-0, 3-0). The two periods mirrored each other, as Ruiz took 1-0 leads with a caution point and in his 30-second clinch periods, scored a two-point gut wrench in each period.
Entering the evening, Jeremiah Davis (El Cajon, Calif./Northern Michigan Univ./Sunkist Kids) also had a chance to win a bronze medal at 60 kg/132 lbs. Davis, however, lost his first repechage match to Sasun Chambaryan of Armenia (0-6, 5-3, 7-0).
In the first period, Davis dominated in the 30-second clinch periods, forcing Chambaryan out of bounds in getting a caution point since Chambaryan could not turn Davis. Then, Davis sealed the period victory with a three-point throw.
In the second period, Chambaryan took the lead in the first minute with a two-point roll. In Chambaryan’s 30-second clinch, Davis again controlled, scoring a reversal and another caution point. But in Davis’ 30-second clinch period, Chambaryan rolled Davis for two points and won the period.
The final stanza belonged strictly to Chambaryan, who forced Davis out of bounds for a 1-0 lead in Davis’ 30-second clinch period, and finished the win with a three-point throw.
