Stanford Falls to #23 Bakersfield
Stanford loses the dual but welcomes back Matt Gentry
Bakersfield, Calif. – The Bakersfield Roadrunners defeated Stanford 29-12 in Bakersfield to end a busy weekend for Cardinal wrestling. The Roadrunners won six of the first seven matches to take an insurmountable 25-3 lead. Cardinal fans should take solace in Matt Gentry’s return to competition and the continued dominance of Imad Kharbush at 174 pounds.
On Bakersfield senior night, the Roadrunners ran away with the dual early. Starting at 184 pounds, senior Scott O’Rear recorded a decision over Ryan Hagen. Hagen scored a near-fall late in the match but could not quite get the pin. Ian Bork (194) then took a 10-8 decision over Ryan Bergman, but that would be the only Stanford success early against talented Bakersfield wrestlers. A crucial match came at 133 pounds, when Juston Johnson took on Matt Sanchez, ranked fourth in the nation and first in the Pac-10. Johnson took down Sanchez and recorded a near fall in the opening seconds, but was subsequently hurt and then pinned at 2:06. That pushed the score to 17-3 for Bakersfield.
The Cardinal took two of the last three matches behind upperclassmen Matt Gentry and Imad Kharbush. Gentry competed for the first time in January, winning his match handily. He took down Brian Busby seven times en route to the 16-5 major decision, his 58th consecutive win. Kharbush, who had two pins in the duals against Lock Haven and Iowa State, again wrestled strongly. He notched six take downs and two near falls in his 17-0 technical fall against Jason Carrasco.
Notes: This was Matt Gentry’s first match since December 30th … Stanford has another busy weekend coming up. They compete on Friday, January 28, when they face Pac-10 foes Oregon State in Corvallis and the University of Oregon in Eugene. They dual against Portland State the next day.
