Eastern Michigan University’s Head Wrestling Coach Charlie Branch has resigned for personal and family reasons. In his resignation, which is effective immediately, Coach Branch said, “This is one of the toughest decisions I have ever made in my life. I’ve given wrestling 20 years and now I need to move my family forward. At this point in my life I have things to take care of with my family and that may mean moving to another part of the country. Things are not always about you individually but also about addressing family issues and I just need to give them some support at this time. “He made the announcement to the team in an emotional meeting on Friday, August 19.
Charlie Branch has been the head coach at Eastern for five years and through his perseverance, his integrity and his hard work, he moved the program to a position of respect. He leaves his position with admiration and gratitude not only from his wrestlers but also from the University, the community, the alumni, and Eastern wrestling fans everywhere.
In his resignation, Coach Branch went on to say, “I want to thank Eastern Michigan University, and especially people like Judge Don Shelton, Roy Wilbanks, Joel Smith, Charlie Ash, and Peter Beck, for the support they have given to me and the wrestling program. My first five years have been about building a program and now there is a lot of positive energy behind us including an upgrade in facilities, alumni support, and increased financial contributions, which will position this program to be very successful in the future.”
Interim Athletic Director Bob England indicated that an immediate national search would be undertaken for a successor. He expressed the hope that a head coach could be in place as soon as possible because the academic year at Eastern begins on September 6.
