COLUMBUS, Ohio – Nine OSU wrestlers are training with members of the Senior World Team at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., this week. USA Wrestling welcomed the Buckeyes in an effort to increase work out partners for the World and National teams.
Former Buckeye Tommy Rowlands, a national team member, also is attending the camp, helping to prep the World squad for the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 25-Oct. 2. Rowlands recently won gold at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, marking his fourth medal and first gold as a member of Team USA.
“USA Wrestling was gracious enough to welcome the OSU wrestlers in an effort to increase workout partners for the World and National team, while hoping to inspire young college wrestlers to pursue the Olympic dream after college, “Rowlands said. “It is truly a great experience for all these guys to train in this type of environment. I know it changed my perspective when I was a young college wrestler.”
Ohio State head coach Russ Hellickson and World team head coach Kevin Jackson envisions the training sessions to be beneficial for the Buckeyes as they train at a higher level.
“It is important for the guys to continue training in the offseason and training with the best guys in the world is great, “Hellickson said. “With them being there, it is a sign of their hunger for wrestling.”
“This being a World team training facility, it is important for us to have quality training partners, “Jackson said. “To have these guys from Ohio State come and help us prepare says a lot about them and they have put themselves in the position to get better.”
