Iowa State wrestling assistant Chris Bono is leaving the university to become an assistant coach at Chattanooga.
Bono will work for Joe Seay, who became Chattanooga’s head coach in May after former Iowa national champion Terry Brands resigned to become the Resident Coach at the United States Olympic Training Center. Seay guided Oklahoma State to NCAA championships in 1989 and 1990 and was the U.S. Olympic coach in 1996.
Part of the Iowa State staff since 1997, Bono has been assistant head coach for the past five years. He wrestled at Iowa State from 1993-97, winning the NCAA championship at 150 pounds in 1996.
“It will be hard to leave Iowa State, “Bono said. “The Cyclone wrestling team and the university in general have meant so much to our family. Iowa State will always be a part of me. This is an opportunity for me to further spread my wings.”
Bono is training for the world championships, which begin Sept. 25 in Budapest Hungary.
