After taking third place at the Southern Scuffle last weekend, the No. 6 Big Red wrestling team will kick off its dual meet schedule when it takes on No. 5 Michigan at New York City’s New York Athletic Club on Tuesday, Jan. 3. The match will be aired via tape delay on College Sports Television on Jan. 7, at 9:30 p.m. Audio of the match will be available via the internet at www.TakedownRadio.com courtesy of Cornell University, Big Red wrestling, Asics and Body Bar. Michigan has a record of 2-1 this season, knocking off No. 12 Penn State and No. 9 Central Michigan and losing to No. 14 Nebraska.
The Wolverines and the Big Red both sent wrestlers to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational earlier this season. Michigan took the top spot in the team standings, racking up 145 points. The Big Red finished second, with 116 team points. Cornell’s Troy Nickerson won the 125 pound title, keeping his record unblemished. Michigan had four individual titles.
Cornell holds a 2-1 all-time record over the Wolverines since the teams first met in the 1958-59 season. The last time the two teams met in a dual meet was at the 2003 Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals. After falling behind early, Cornell won the final four bouts of the match to win 19-16.
The New York Athletic Club is sure to be treated to an exciting event as both teams have six wrestlers ranked in the top-20 of their respective weight brackets. The bouts at 133 (No. 15 Mike Mormile vs. No. 13 Mark Moos), 157 (No. 9 Dustin Manotti vs. No. 8 Steve Luke) and 165 (No. 11 Steve Anceravage vs. No. 1 Ryan Churella) are sure to be ones to watch.
Fans planning on attending the event will need to dress according to the New York Athletic Club’s dress code for admission into the building. Men must wear sport coats with a collared shirt or turtleneck and women must be in comparable business attire. No jeans or sneakers are allowed.
