CLEVELAND “The first day of the national duals got underway at the Convocation Center at Cleveland State University today. Friday’s duals consisted of Division II and Division III matches. The Division I portion of the tournament begins Saturday morning at 11 a.m. eastern time.
Here is a look at some of the developments from the first day of action:
UNO Survives Tough Match Against MSU-Mankato
Nebraska-Omaha, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II and the defending national champions, survived a scare Friday in the second round of the National Duals. After defeating Findlay in the opening round, 29-14, the Mavericks edged North Central Conference rival Minnesota State, Mankato 18-15 to advance to the semifinals. The Mavericks will meet fourth-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in the tournament’s semifinal at 9 a.m. (eastern time) Saturday.
Each team won five matches in the dual. However, Eli Dominguez, (141), Patrick Allibone, (149), and J.D. Naig, (165), each won their matches by major decision, thus earning four bonus points, which accounted for the Mavericks’ winning margin.
The National Duals were the first dual meets of the season for coach Mike Denney’s UNO Mavericks. The team competed in six open tournaments heading into this weekend.
Augustana Rolls Into Semifinals
Second-ranked Augustana College moved into the semifinals of the Division II portion with two impressive victories Friday.
