The View from Stillwater RE Cowboys Falling to Gophers

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa –
Cole Konrad proved his All-Star decision over Steve Mocco was no fluke as Konrad hit an inside trip and sent Mocco to his back in the third period and pinning him to give Minnesota the National Duals title over top-seeded Oklahoma State at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Sunday evening.

The loss for the Cowboys snapped their dual winning streak at 30 consecutive duals, and it snapped Mocco’s winning streak at 85 consecutive collegiate matches.

The Cowboys got an early lift from both Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan at 125 and 133, respectively. Scott used a takedown and a three-point near fall to propel him to a major decision over Andrew Domingues.

Morgan recorded two takedowns over fourth-ranked Mack Reiter in the first period. Reiter scored a takedown with 17 seconds left in the match to pull within a point, but Morgan was able to hold on to put OSU out in front of the dual 7-0.

Minnesota tightened the dual with consecutive upsets at 141 and 149. Manuel Rivera defeated Daniel Frishkorn, while Dustin Schlatter defeated Zack Esposito.

C.P. Schlatter gave the Gophers the dual lead, 9-7, after the first five matches. Ward took a shot at Schlatter in the final seconds but could not finish the takedown before the final buzzer sounded.

Johny Hendricks gave the Pokes the lead back in the dual by avenging his All-Star loss to Minnesota’s Matt Nagel with a convincing 8-3 decision.

The Dual see-sawed back in favor of Minnesota after the 174-pound match. Gabe Dretsch scored a third period takedown to defeat OSU’s Brandon Mason, 3-1.

The Gophers took a five-point lead in the dual after the 184-pound match. Roger Kish gave UMN a 15-10 lead with a decision over Rusty Blackmon.

Jake Rosholt put the Cowboys in position to win the dual heading into the final match of the dual. Rosholt received a major decision over Mitch Kuhlman to make the dual 15-14 heading into the heavyweight match.

Mocco did not hold up his end, however, as Konrad tripped him to his back and recorded the fall in 5:26.

The Cowboys will return to action on Friday for a double dual inside Gallagher-Iba Arena when Cal Poly and Fresno State come to Stillwater with the first dual scheduled for 6 p.m.
