Montclair State Reclassifies Wrestling, 4 Others as Club Sports

From New York Newsday

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — Montclair State University will drop five varsity sports, effective with the 2005-06 academic year, officials said Thursday, citing cost considerations.

Men’s and women’s cross country, men’s lacrosse, women’s tennis and wrestling will be reclassified from varsity to club sport status.

“Due to limited available fiscal and human resources, the University can no longer effectively support 21 teams at the intercollegiate level, “the school said in a prepared statement.

“This will allow us to better utilize our limited resources to support our varsity teams at the conference level, “said Karen L. Pennington, the university’s vice president for student development and campus life.

Athletic director Holly Gera said the school considered factors such as the part-time status of head coaches, available local competition, facility demands, travel considerations and equipment costs. Coaches in all five sports were part-time university employees, Gera said.

Montclair State’s teams compete at the NCAA Division III level in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
