LAKELAND, Fla. – Trey Toms, Moore Haven High School’s one-man wrestling team, finished sixth at 135 pounds to earn a medal in Class 1A at the state wrestling tournament Saturday.
Toms won his first two matches, then lost the next three.
“It’s real hard to get here, let alone place, so he did well, “said his coach and mother, Kim Toms.
The Toms family started a wrestling team at Moore Haven because Trey wanted to pursue the sport.
Because he’s the Terriers’ first wrestler, Trey is also the first to place at state. But the senior said he was disappointed with his showing – especially a defeat in the semifinals against Osvaldo Friger of Archbishop Carroll.
Trey lost twice more after that.
“I’m sorry to say it, but I was so disappointed losing the semifinal match, I didn’t even care anymore, “Trey said. “I almost had him pinned in the first few seconds. I tried the hardest I’ve ever tried. I just wasn’t good enough to beat him.”
Toms hopes to continue his wrestling career in college, perhaps as a walk-on at Penn State.
“Hopefully I’ll get to go collegiate and show people what I’m made of, “he said.
