BETHLEHEM, Pa. “After guiding the Mountain Hawks to their fifth consecutive EIWA team championship, Lehigh head coach Greg Strobel was named the conference’s Coach of the Year on Wednesday. This marks the fourth time in eleven seasons at Lehigh that Strobel has won the award, which is voted on by the conferences head coaches.
This year, despite numerous injuries and lineup changes, Strobel led the Mountain Hawks to a 13-5-1 dual record. At last weekend’s EIWA Championships, four Lehigh wrestlers exceeded their pre-tournament seed, which helped provide valuable team points, as Lehigh held off Cornell by
14.5 points to become the first team in 70 years to win five straight team titles.
Under Strobel’s guidance, Lehigh tied a school record, qualifying nine wrestlers for the NCAA Championships. Strobel also coached his first true freshman NCAA qualifier in Matt Fisk, and coached the lowest-seeded wrestler to reach the EIWA finals in sixth seed freshman Trevor Chinn.
Strobel was also named EIWA Coach of the Year after leading Lehigh to championships in 2000, 2002 and 2003. He was also named the NWCA national coach of the year following the 2004 season, in which Lehigh scored its most points ever at the NCAA Championships.
Strobel will lead the nine Lehigh qualifiers to the NCAA Championships, March 16-18 at Ford Center in Oklahoma City.
