Wrestling meet pits top preps in Showcase
Featuring some of the top wrestlers from Oregon and California, the second annual Or/Cal Senior All-Star Showcase tournament is slated for Saturday at Southern Oregon University.
The dual-meet showcase begins at 6 p.m. at McNeal Pavilion. Cost for admission is $6 for adults and $3 for students.
“We lost by a couple of matches last year, “says Chuck Mondale, Oregon assistant team coordinator. “We’re looking to even the score.”
The winning squad is awarded the Dave Schultz Cup, in the memory of the former Olympic champion and Ashland resident.
Mondale says each lineup will include several future Division I wrestlers.
Some local participants include Eagle Point state champion Jake McCoy, Crater state champion Jon Bernhardt, North Medford’s Jon Ulrey and Tim Endecott, Chris Platt of Eagle Point and Richard Alves of Grants Pass.
“That was the best wrestling I’ve seen in quite a while, “Mondale says of last year’s showcase. “It was very high caliber and entertaining.”
In conjunction with the wrestling meet, world champion and two-time NCAA champion Les Gutches will conduct a clinic earlier in the day.
The clinic, which costs $40, begins at 10 a.m. at McNeal Pavilion. It includes a two-hour morning session (10 a.m.-noon), a two-hour afternoon session (12:30-2 p.m.) and optional live matches between campers (2-4 p.m.).
Proceeds from the clinic go to offset the travel and accommodation expenses for the showcase participants.
