Freshman grappler plans to stay mentally ahead of the game … literally
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Each week throughout the 2004-2005 wrestling season, one wrestler will be chosen at random to answer 10 equally random questions developed by Purdue’s Sports Information office. This week’s random wrestler is sophomore 174-pounder Dan Bedoy, interviewed by student assistant Erin Myers.
1. How long were you a Boilermaker fan before deciding to attend Purdue?
I’ve liked Purdue since I was little … well, more like sixth or seventh grade. Most of my family graduated from here, like aunts and uncles and stuff, although my mom graduated from IU. And of course it made me a huge fan when they recruited me.
2. What did you think of the result of Colts/Patriots game this past Sunday?
It just made me so happy to see Sean Schmaltz so upset … that was the best part. The football game itself didn’t really matter too much.
3. One of your cousins is teammate Rene Hernandez … he mentioned during his “10 Questions With … ” interview that he frequently pushes your physical limits in the wrestling room. Is that true?
Yeah, he helps to push me in a lot of ways, although since I’m physically quite a bit bigger than he is, I whoop on him a lot. He’s always there for me as far as encouragement and moral support goes, and he was one of the biggest factors in me deciding to come here.
4. I noticed that it mentioned in the media guide that you enjoy playing chess … how long have you been playing and how good would you say you are?
I’ve been playing for probably eight or nine years, and I’d say I’m at eight or nine moves ahead.
Pardon me … eight or nine moves ahead?
It means that I’m to the point now where when I am strategizing, I’m thinking about eight or nine moves ahead as to what I should do for the current move.
5. If you had only 24 hours left to live, what would you do and why?
I would take everyone I liked or thought was cool down to Tahiti and we would just chill out and surf and stuff, just hang out for the day. It’d be awesome.
6. What is something unique about yourself that most others may not know or realize?
I would say that I have a good sense of style when it comes to clothes.
So would you consider yourself an Abercrombie & Fitch kind of guy?
No, I’m not so much into that. Brand names don’t make up your style, but it’s how you wear your clothes that make your style.
7. If you could have any career in the world, what would it be and why?
I already know I want to own the largest real estate company in the world. I’d call it “Be Part of the 20%, Not the 80%, “because I plan on being a part of the 20 percent of the population that are happy with their jobs, successful, and ambitious, not the 80 percent that are unhappy and complain about their jobs. But no matter what I do, I will be successful. I just won’t accept any less.
8. If you could go on a date with any celebrity, who would it be and why?
Ooh…I’d have to say Penelope Cruz. There is just something about her – she’s so exotic.
9. Why did you decide to make the jump from 157 pounds to 174 pounds in the middle of the season?
I was just getting so sick of cutting weight. I also felt that I would be stronger at 174 pounds since I could eat more of the stuff I needed to eat. My body is still having trouble making the adjustments, but I’ll get there.
10. Finally, what is your biggest pet peeve?
Oh boy, it’s definitely when Sean Schmaltz farts in my bedroom. He thinks I’m kidding, but I’m not.
