IOWA CITY, IA – Tom Brands said he’s ready for ”an enormous challenge” of getting the University of Iowa wrestling program back on top.
”We’re up for the challenge,” he said Wednesday after being introduced as the Hawkeyes’ eighth coach. ”My biggest priority is uniting the program.”
Iowa athletics director Bob Bowlsby said after talking with several people about the job, ”we came down to one candidate.
”He’s exactly the kind of fierce, competitive spirit we’re looking for.
”I think he’s exactly the right guy to put Iowa back on the traditional pedestal that we enjoyed over so many years.”
Brands signed a five-year contract worth $115,000 per year. Bowlsby said the contract also has bonus incentives for Big Ten and NCAA
performance and academics.
Brands is replacing Jim Zalesky, who was fired after nine years on the job.
