STILLWATER, Okla. — An Oklahoma State volunteer wrestling coach who was arrested on a felony drunken driving charge resigned from his position today.
Four-time NCAA wrestling champion Pat Smith is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence.
A Payne County deputy sheriff stopped Smith early Friday after the deputy saw Smith’s pickup truck leave a rural Stillwater road twice.
Smith’s brother, John Smith, is wrestling coach at OSU. John Smith said there’s great pain in having his brother leave his staff after 11 years.
Pat Smith joined his brother’s coaching staff in 1994 after winning his fourth NCAA individual title that year. He’ll be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame next month.
Pat Smith was arrested on an aggravated DUI charge in 2001 and pleaded no contest in 2002.
He received a one-year suspended sentence and was ordered to perform community service.
