After recording three wins at the Wendy’s Duals on Sunday (Jan. 16), Marcus Effner has been named the Eastern Wrestling League wrestler of the week, the EWL announced Tuesday. He is the first Viking to be honored this season.
The Viking freshman tallied wins in all of his bouts on the day, scoring a 6-3 decision over Joe Henning of Northern Illinois at 157 for Cleveland State’s first win of the meet.
After trailing 7-4 to Central Michigan’s Andy Keller late in the third period of his second bout, Effner recorded a quick takedown and a two-point near fall as time expired to force overtime after Keller received a point from riding time. Seconds into the first sudden victory, Effner scored a takedown to claim a 10-8 triumph.
The Garfield Heights native then won a close-fought 4-3 contest with Gary Skoch of Ashland in the final match of the day.
“His record of 15-8 against very good competition proves his potential to be a star in our program, “head coach Jack Effner said. “I’m sure his best days are ahead as he matures and gains experience. We need some others on team to follow his lead.”
