Joe Seay plans to resign as wrestling coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
“I am leaving,” Seay confirmed Friday morning.
The coach wouldn’t get into specifics, saying only that he is looking at his options and that he won’t turn in an official resignation until Monday.
Matt Pope, who was named UTC’s interim athletic director after Steve Sloan retired, confirmed Friday afternoon that he had talked with Seay.
“Right now we anticipate his resignation, and we should have it in hand on Monday,” Pope said. “Other than that, it is university policy not to comment on personnel matters.” Pope declined to say if the 64-year-old Seay had been asked to resign.
Seay spent one season directing the program and took the Mocs to Southern Conference and regular season championships.
Seay had intended to finish his coaching career here.
“I had made a five-year commitment. Some things were in my control and some were not.”
Pope said the university would conduct a national search for another head coach.
