Nebraska Wins Virginia Duals for Second Straight Year
The fifth-ranked Nebraska wrestling team won the Virginia Duals for the
second straight year Saturday after a pair of dual wins.
The Huskers defeated Indiana, 25-9, in the finals after a 30-12 defeat of
Rider in the semifinals.
The victory over Indiana was the sixth time this season that NU held its
opponent to ten or fewer points in a dual. It also was Nebraska’s second
dual win over the Big Ten this season. NU has wrestled four Big Ten
opponents over the last eleven days, earning a 2-1-1 record.
In the semifinals with the Huskers ahead only 16-12 after a loss at 174
pounds, Nebraska got bonus-point victories from Pascoe, Padden and May to
clinch the win. Pascoe started the win string with a 15-7 major decision
over Doug Umehauer. Padden followed with a major decision win of his own,
15-3 over Jeff Black, and May closed the dual with a win by forfeit.
After a loss to Rider’s Ryan Smith at 125 pounds, Nebraska collected three
straight wins. Dominick Moyer beat Tim Harner, 6-1, at 133 pounds. Matt
Murray pinned Don Fisch 5:38 into their 149-pound match, and Chris Nedens
earned a 13-5 major decision win over Rider’s Michael Palma at 149 pounds.
After a pin by Rider’s Dave Miller at 157 pounds, the Huskers’ Jacob Klein
beat Ryan Cunningham at 165 pounds. Rider picked up its last win of the
night in a 6-4 win by Sean Jenkins at 174 pounds.
Nebraska is now 13-1-1 on the season. The fourth-ranked Huskers turn to the
Southeast to take on North Carolina and North Carolina State on Jan. 22,
2005.
