Brockport, NY — Matt Kyler, former state champion from Clearfield, made his collegiate debut for the Miliatary Academy a successful one by placing second at the Oklahoma Gold/ Brockport Wrestling Classic.
Wrestling at 133, Kyler went 3-1 on the day.
He started his career by beating Jeremy Deboy of Kent St. 10-5. Jeff Schell of Brown was then beaten by Kyler 5-1. Not known for his pinning in high school, it didn’t take long for Kyler to earn his first collegiate pin. The victim was Rickey Donald of Bloomsburg in 4:00.
In the tourney finals, Kyler ran into the #12 ranked 133-pounder in the country. Kyler took Mark Budd of Buffalo into overtime before getting beaten, 6-1.
Kyler earned the number one spot on the Army team at 133 by beating William Simpson twice in wrestle-offs.
Simpson was an NCAA national qualifier last year at 125 with a season record of 26-16.
