A two-time state wrestling champion from Des Moines was arrested early Dec. 24 on charges of disorderly conduct.
Montell Marion, 18, who won state titles with Valley and Roosevelt high schools, was arrested at 3:30 a.m. by police after he was kicked out of Club A.M., 200 E. 2nd St., following a confrontation with another patron, according to a police report.
After he was escorted out, Marion stood on the sidewalk and street outside the bar and “yelled profanities and epithets at club staff at the door, and also passersby on the sidewalk, “the report said. While yelling, Marion, who is black, accused the staff of racism.
Police ordered Marion to leave the area. When he refused and continued his behavior, he was arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail.
Marion’s father, Del, said there is another side to the arrest, and claims the arresting officer “roughed up “his son and fabricated a police report.
“Concerning the incident that involved my son, I am already in the midst of investigating this with the police chief of Des Moines, “said Del Marion, an employee of The Des Moines Register. “I’ve made a phone call to his assistant and I’m waiting for a call back. This situation has happened with other young people that have attended this club. My oldest son has witnessed this and I’m making sure that other things like this didn’t happen again.”
Des Moines Police Department spokesman Sgt. Todd Dykstra could not be reached late Tuesday. Sgt. Richard Schuett, who was on duty Tuesday night, said he could not comment.
Marion, who lives at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., was charged with felony willful injury in May 2005 after he and another Roosevelt wrestler, Semir Duric, allegedly beat up a Des Moines teenager.
The case was resolved in juvenile court, according to records.
