Cavaliers fall to Bobcats in UVa’s first match at the Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team (3-3) dropped a close 18-15 decision to the Ohio Bobcats (4-5-1) in the Cavaliers’ first match of the 25th Annual Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. The Cavaliers won five of the 10 bouts in the dual against the Bobcats, but it wasn’t enough as Ohio used a technical fall and major decision to its advantage to edge the Cavaliers by three points in the dual.

Virginia used back-to-back wins by decision from Anthony Burke (125-pounds) and Byron Dunlap (133-pounds) to take an early 6-0 lead two matches into the dual. After Ohio earned a decision at 141-pounds to make it 6-3, UVa responded at 149-pounds when Paula Dunstan posted a decision for the Cavaliers to stretch Virginia’s lead to 9-3. Ohio closed to 9-8 after a technical fall win at 157-pounds to pull within one before UVa’s Will Durkee posted a decision at 165-pounds to give UVa its final lead at 12-8 with four bouts to go.

However, the Bobcats won three consecutive matches at 174, 184 and 197-pounds to turn a four-point deficit into a six-point lead at 18-12 with just one match remaining. UVa’s Nick Smith earned a decision at heavyweight to cut Ohio’s lead to 18-15, but Virginia feel three points short of the Bobcats as Ohio held on for the win.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 3-3 overall. The win improves Ohio’s record to 4-5-1 on the year. This was the first meeting in wrestling between the Cavaliers and Bobcats. UVa will now face the North Carolina Tar Heels in their second match of the 25th Annual Virginia Duals. North Carolina dropped a 26-12 decision to the #6 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers in its first match in the event.
