When was the last time you tested your limits?
This past week my son made a choice.
All season he has been wrestling at the 135 weight class on the team. In those meets he has pinned his opponent in 35 seconds or less — one time it was in 9 seconds! It was fun to share videos of a fast pin, but my son wasn’t really learning anything either.
This past week, coach asked him to wrestle varsity at 145 against a kid that had been a state contender last year. He could whip someone where he had been, or help the coach and team strategically by “wrestling up.” He chose to “wrestle up.” I saw my son put in the most of himself into a match ever. Intensity and concentration was on his face. He was bridging (that is him in the purple bridging) better than ever before. While he ultimately lost after 2 minutes and 25 seconds, I couldn’t have been more proud of his performance.
He gained good experience and learned a thing or two that he’ll do differently next time. Coach’s strategy worked and his team won overall. My son learned more about what he was capable of. (Hey! The guy didn’t pin him in under 35 seconds!) Coach sent me this message: “I was very proud of David’s effort last night. I asked him to go out there and give a good fight and he sure did. I couldn’t of asked any more of him very pleased with his performance.” ****************************
So, I ask you, where are you choosing to stay where it is a sure thing and where are you choosing to “wrestle up?”

Well, in my case it was cutting a lot of weight. But, it was totally out of my comfort zone. As a matter of fact i never wrestled what would’ve been my actual weight my 4 out of 5 yrs of varsity. But, i truly enjoyed being pushed to my extreme. And to be honest im thankful that i was.
