A record wrestling crowd of 5,150 packed into The Pavilion at UC Davis to see the Aggies face Iowa in a nonconference meet Sunday.
And while the 26-9 victory for the Hawkeyes (5-1) was predictable, the Aggies (3-2) gave the home crowd plenty to cheer by winning three of the final four matches.
After Iowa won the first six matches to take a 22-0 lead, UCD broke through with an 11-4 victory for Ronnie Silva at 174 pounds.
Next, Brandon Bear won 6-5 against No. 2-ranked Paul Bradley at 184 pounds. The loss was just the second of the season for Bradley, who is the consensus No. 2 in his weight class.
Then, Reed Shelger won 3-2 over Iowa’s Adam Fellers.
The Hawkeyes’ Matt Fields won the 285-pound match by a major decision to end the meet.
The storied Hawkeyes team is coached by Jim Zalesky, brother of Aggies coach Lennie Zalesky.
