Iowa State tops ‘U’ in top-10 showdown

Fourth-ranked Iowa State rallied for a 21-12 victory over the eighth-ranked Gophers wrestling team Sunday afternoon in Ames, Iowa.
Senior Bobbe Lowe improved to 22-0 with a victory at 125 pounds. His 22 consecutive victories are tied for the 11th-longest streak in school history.
Second-ranked Cole Konrad (20-2) gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead with a 4-3 overtime decision against 10th-ranked Coleman Scott at heavyweight. The two exchanged escapes in the second and third periods, but in the first overtime Konrad earned a takedown following his escape and took a 4-1 lead.
Lowe increased the Gophers’ lead to 6-0 with an 11-5 decision against 15th-ranked Grant Nakamura. In a matchup of two four-time Iowa state high school champions, redshirt freshman Mack Reiter took an 11-6 decision against the Cyclones’ Jesse Sundell at 133 pounds.
Iowa State (11-0) cut the Gophers’ lead to 9-5 as top-ranked Nate Gallick earned a 22-7 technical fall against redshirt freshman Manuel Rivera at 141 pounds. Redshirt freshman C.P. Schlatter continued his comeback from a knee injury with a 7-3 decision against Jason Knipp at 149 pounds. After suffering a serious knee injury this past summer, Schlatter improved to 6-1 and pushed Minnesota’s lead to 12-5. The Cyclones responded with five straight victories to clinch the match.
Iowa State cut the lead to 12-9 behind an 11-2 major decision from seventh-ranked Trent Paulson against redshirt freshman Nik Lentz at 157 pounds.
The Cyclones evened the match at 12 when sixth-ranked Travis Paulson took a 3-1 decision against eighth-ranked Matt Nagel at 165.
Nagel is 18-4, with his four losses coming against top-10 opponents by a total of six points.
