Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), the champion at 60 kg/132 lbs., was named Outstanding Wrestler in the men’s Greco-Roman division at the New York Athletic Club Christmas International in New York City, December 19. The tournament was presented by the Metropolitan Wrestling Association.
Warren, 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up, defeated Willie Madison (Metairie, La./USOEC) in the gold-medal finals, 6-0, 4-0. Warren dominated the action throughout the match. In three matches, Warren did not allow a point to any of his opponents.
2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army)captured the title at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., pinning Khoren Papoyan of the Sunkist Kids, from the clinch at the end of the first period. Byers was competing in his first event since placing second at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Papoyan was a World placewinner for Armenia and has been training and competing in the United States in recent years.
2004 Olympian Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) edged 2000 Olympic Trials runner-up Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs., with a 1-0, 1-0 victory.
2003 U.S. World Team member Justin Ruiz (New York AC) captured the 96 kg/211.5 lbs. division with a 1-0, 1-0 win over Adam Wheeler (Marquette, Mich./USOEC).
Capturing the title for the second straight year at 55 kg/121 lbs. was Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), who defeated. Joseph Betterman (Chicago, Ill./New York AC), 1-0, 1-0 in the championship match.
Winning clinches at the end of both the first and second period, Glenn Garrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) stopped Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio/Gator WC), 3-0, 1-0 in the gold-medal finals at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
2004 U.S. Nationals champion Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) won the 74 kg/163 pounds finals by injury default when two-time U.S. World Team member T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) did not compete in the finals. They are longtime rivals, and have battled many times in the past in finals of events.
