ATHENS, Ohio “Without three-time All-American Jake Percival (Elyria) and anyone healthy enough to compete at 165 pounds, the Ohio wrestling team was no match for No. 13 Missouri and its eight nationally ranked grapplers. The Tigers won eight of 10 matches for a 38-9 dual meet victory Sunday at the Convocation Center.
“I thought some of our guys wrestled really well,” said Bobcat head coach Joel Greenlee. “Not that it’s an excuse but most of our team has had the flu all week. You still need to go out there and fight hard, though, and we just didn’t fight hard enough at a few weights.”
Missouri (4-0) started the meet with two of its top wrestlers getting pins. Ben Askren, ranked second in the country at 174 pounds, earned the fall over Ohio’s Ed Willis (Liberty Township) with 41 seconds left in the first period while 10th-ranked Matt Pell pinned Brian Cesear (Amherst) at the 3:30 mark to give the Tigers a 12-0 lead.
In a battle of two nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 18 Jeff Foust fought off No. 17 Joel Weimer (Waynesville) for a 5-3 decision at 197 pounds. The Tigers then extended their lead to 21-0 after Chase Wetenkamp pinned 20th-ranked Jeremiah Beltran (Olathe, Kan.) just 35 seconds into the heavyweight match.
The Bobcats (3-3) got on the board in a big way with the 125-pound match. Redshirt freshman Caleb Metcalf (Waterville) evened his record at 5-5 with a pin of Tim Kephart at the 1:01 mark to make it 21-6.
“The more he wrestles, the more he gets on the mat, the better he is,” said Greenlee about Metcalf. “He’s wrestled great the last few times out and I think he’s getting better and better. Today he watched four guys before him not do so well and he goes out there and gets us going.”
Missouri won the next two weights, however, as Tyler McCormick registered an 18-0 technical fall over Frank Brown (Westerville) at 133 and Chris McCormick scored a 4-2 decision over Jon Spires (Lancaster) at 141 pounds. Both McCormicks are nationally ranked by Amateur Wrestling News with Chris at 12th and Tyler at 19th.
At 149 pounds, Ohio sophomore Aaron Gomoll (Bay Village) improved his record to 6-7 with a 3-0 decision over Josh Wagner, making it 29-9 in favor of the Tigers.
“Gomoll just fights hard every match,” Greenlee said. “I’m not sure he was better than that guy, and I told him that, but he outfought him. That’s the way Gomoll wins matches and that’s the mark of a good wrestler.”
Missouri’s Brad Cieleski, listed 15th in the latest Intermat/NWCA rankings, then won a 6-0 decision over Mike Allen (Springfield), who was filling in for Percival at 157 pounds. The dual meet ended with Tiger 165-pounder Tyron Woodley winning by forfeit since both Bobcats at that weight “Tony DeAnna (Westlake) and Vinny DiGiovanni (Solon) “were too sick to wrestle.
Ohio now has a little bit of a break until the Midlands Tournament on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. The Bobcats will then travel to the Buckeye Duals on Jan. 8 and to the Virginia Duals on Jan. 14-15 before returning to The Convo to host Eastern Michigan on Jan. 20.
