Hawkeye come back from 16-7 deficit to score their 30th win against the Hoosiers
IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa wrestling team came back from a 16-7 deficit to defeat Indiana, 17-16, Sunday afternoon in Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. It was Iowa’s 15th consecutive win over Indiana and its 30th overall in the series. The Hawkeyes finish the 2004-05 dual season at 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten. Indiana finished at 16-5, 4-4.
Hawkeye junior 149-pounder Ty Eustice picked up his 75th career win in fine fashion, scoring a 17-7 major decision in the last match of the dual to give Iowa the one-point team win. The dual was tied 7-7 after the first four matches, with Iowa’s points coming from redshirt freshman Mark Perry’s 13-2 major decision at 165 and junior Paul Bradley’s 12-8 win at 184. Indiana built a 16-7 lead with wins at the next three weights, but decisions by junior Mario Galanakis at 133 and freshman Alex Tsirtsis at 141 cut the lead to 16-13 going into the final match. Eustice needed a decision to tie and a major decision or more to secure Iowa’s team win. He scored four takedowns in the first period and three more in the rest of the match to seal the win for the Hawkeyes.
Iowa’s next action will be hosting the 2005 Big Ten Championships March 5-6 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa is the defending team champion and will be looking for its 32nd conference title in school history.
