No. 2 Iowa State falls to No. 6 Nebraska 16-15
LINCOLN, Neb. – The second-ranked Iowa State wrestling team finished its dual season with a 16-15 loss to No. 6 Nebraska Saturday in the Nebraska Coliseum. ISU trailed 16-12 heading into the final match with No. 1 ranked Iowa Stater Nate Gallick facing No. 4 Matt Murray at 141 pounds. Gallick, who defeated Murray twice last season, prevailed with a 5-3 decision, but ISU fell just short of picking up its 17th win of the season. Iowa State ends the dual season with an 18-2 dual record. Nebraska is 19-2-1.
All-American heavyweight Scott Coleman gave Iowa State its only lead with a 2-1 decision over Jon May. Coleman scored a takedown with five seconds remaining to claim his third conference win.
Fifth-ranked Cyclone Trent Paulson moved to 27-1 on the year with a 9-4 decision at 157 pounds over No. 12 B.J. Wright. ISU’s Nick Passolano picked up his 14th win of the season over Nebraska’s Marc Harwood at 174 pounds, 8-3.
Iowa State’s Trevor Smith upset 12th ranked B.J. Padden at 197 pounds, 4-1 to improve to 19-8. Padden, now 23-9, had bested Smith last year in the third-place match at the Big 12 Championships. Cyclone Jason Knipp narrowly missed beating his fourth Nebraska wrestler at 149 pounds on the season, falling to David Ingalls, 4-2.
Iowa State will compete at the Big 12 Championships March 5 in Omaha at the Qwest Center before ending the year at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis at the Savvis Center March 17-19.
