Buckeyes Knock Off No. 13 Penn State, 21-17
Bergman, Enright, Nail lead Ohio State to first league
Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State wrestling team (8-11, 1-7 Big Ten) closed out the 2005 regular season with its Big Ten finale at No. 13 Penn State (10-10, 3-5 Big Ten) Friday in State College, Pa. The Buckeyes won six of 10 weight classes to walk away with a 21-17 upset victory. J.D. Bergman and Kirk Nail sealed the Ohio State win with decisions at 197 and HWT to put the dual out of reach at 21-11.
T.J. Enright, ranked 16th in the nation at 133, got the Buckeyes off to a solid start with a 6-5 decision win over No. 19 Bryan Heller of Penn State. With the decision, Enright (Fr., Galloway, Ohio) notched his 29th triumph of the season and concluded Big Ten dual action at 5-3. Ohio State extended its lead to 12-0 after a win by forfeit from freshman Jason Johnstone (Massillon, Ohio) at 141 and an 8-4 decision victory from junior Steve Wolery (Cincinnati, Ohio) at 149.
Penn State climbed back into the dual with a major decision at 157, but another freshman Keegan Mueller (Dallas Texas), who wrestled up a weight class at 165, put the Buckeyes ahead by a 15-4 score with a 5-4 decision winner over Nittany Lion Jarrad Turner.
Penn State rallied again as the dual moved to the heavier weight classes. At 174, James Yonushonis topped Buckeye junior Nathaniel Augustson (Rio Rancho, N.M.) via major decision at 14-5. In the 184 bout, No. 5-ranked Eric Bradley downed OSU sophomore Alex Picazo (Grandview, Ohio) by a 7-3 decision to set the dual at 15-11.
Bergman and Nail finished off the OSU victory as each tallied a decision at 197 and HWT. Bergman, ranked between fourth and sixth in the nation in several polls, defeated 15th-ranked Phil Davis, 6-4. The win sets Bergman’s season record at 33-6 and 6-2 in league duals. At HWT, Nail assured the Buckeyes of their first Big Ten win on the season with a 4-3 decision over PSU’s Joel Edwards. Nail and Edwards entered the third period knotted at 2-2. Nail started the final stanza in the down position and reversed a near takedown by Edwards into the deciding score at 4-3 with less than a minute remaining in regulation.
The Nittany Lions completed the 21-17 score with a win by fall at 125.
