DES MOINES, Iowa Feb 15, 2005 ” Joe Williams, an Olympic wrestler and three-time NCAA champion, was charged with indecent exposure in a case dating to 2003 while he was an assistant coach at the University of Iowa.
Williams, a 30-year-old former star wrestler at Iowa, surrendered to Iowa City police Tuesday. Court records said he was released on his own recognizance after his initial appearance.
Williams denied intentionally exposing himself during a visit to an Iowa City apartment Nov. 14, 2003. The charge, a serious misdemeanor, is punishable by up to one year in jail and up to a $1,500 fine.
Athletic director Bob Bowlsby declined to comment.
At the time, Williams had been an assistant on the Hawkeyes’ wrestling staff for about three years. He resigned about three months later, saying he wanted to concentrate on making the U.S. Olympic freestyle team. He lost a last-second decision one match short of wrestling for a medal at the Athens Games.
Williams, a two-time Big Ten champion, had a 129-9 record while wrestling at Iowa.
