SPORTS COMMISSIONER PODZIBA ANNOUNCES THE INAUGURAL MAYOR’S CUP HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth Podziba announced today that the Inaugural Mayor’s Cup High School Wrestling Championships will take place on Saturday, February 12th at Wagner College in Staten Island. Athletes from over 30 schools will compete in 15 weight classes for the title of Mayor’s Cup Champion. Schools expected to compete include returning private school state champions Horace Mann, three-time defending City Champions FDR and returning Catholic City Champions Mount Saint Michael Academy.
“The Mayor’s Cup High School Wrestling Championships will feature the city’s finest wrestlers and provide spectators an opportunity to experience a spirited competition in the world’s oldest competitive sport, “said Commissioner Podziba. “I commend all of the athletes for the hard work and discipline that it takes to be a champion and wish them the best of luck. “
“Hosting the 2003 World Championships of Wrestling in New York City demonstrated New Yorkers’ passion for wrestling. The Mayor’s Cup is another opportunity to showcase and encourage youth to excel in this great Olympic sport”, said NYC2012 Director of Sports Wendy Hilliard.
The Mayor’s Cup is a collaborative effort by a diverse assembly of groups that include the New York City Sports Commission, the Metropolitan Wrestling Association, Wagner College, the Catholic High Schools Athletic Association, the New York State Private Schools Wrestling Coaches Association, the Public Schools Athletic League and NYC2012.
“The Mayor’s Cup culminates a long year, not only for the people who have worked to put this event together, but for all the wrestlers that have trained tirelessly in pursuit of their team and personal goals, “said Jim Regan, President of the New York State Private School Wrestling Coaches Association. “We are pleased that all of the participating programs agreed to be part of the inaugural Mayor’s Cup and have no doubt that in years to come, the level of participation will increase as more programs give their athletes the opportunity to be crowned the city’s best. “
Tickets for the event are $5 for adults and $1 for children under the age of 12 and students. All tickets can be purchased the day of the event at Wagner College.
Preliminary rounds are scheduled to begin at 9:00 am. For more information, please visit our Mayor’s Cup Wrestling page.
