No. 4 Lehigh topples No. 24 Army for 20th dual win

Bethlehem, PA “No. 4 Lehigh picked up its 20th dual win of the season Friday night as the Mountain Hawks posted a convincing 32-7 victory over No. 24 Army at the Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks took eight of ten bouts on the evening as they post their fifth consecutive dual win and improve to 20-3 on the season, 6-0 in the EIWA. The Black Knights are 11-4, 4-1 in conference duals.

The match started at 149 pounds and it was the Black Knights getting on the board first, as No. 3 Phillip Simpson dominated Dave Nakasone for a 16-2 major decision. The Mountain Hawks would come back with three consecutive bonus wins including Troy Letters’ tech. fall over Chad Marzec sandwiched in between major decisions by Derek Zinck and Travis Frick.

Lehigh lost a tough one at 184, as David Helfrich stepped in but dropped a 3-1 sudden victory decision to Charles Martin. It would be the Mountain Hawks’ final defeat of the night as they reeled off five consecutive victories to coast to the 25 point win

Jon Trenge made his return to the Lehigh lineup at 197. After shaking off some rust, Trenge posted a 16-4 major decision to top Todd Wisman. Paul Weibel was next as he pulled off one of the Mountain Hawks’ biggest victories. Trailing 4-2 in the second period Weibel scored a pin on Joe Forsman to put Lehigh up 23-7 with three bouts remaining. The Mountain Hawks were strong in the light weights as well, as Andrew Rizzi, Jeff Santo and Cory Cooperman picked up victories to close out the Black Knights.

The victory vaults Lehigh to the 20 victory mark, just the second time in school history the team has posted 20 dual wins in a season.

Lehigh will be back in action on Sunday, as the Mountain Hawks welcome top-ranked Oklahoma State to Stabler Arena for the 2005 Sheridan Dual. The match gets underway at 6:00 and is completely sold out. For fans unable to acquire tickets, the match will be televised live on Service Electric 2 Sports. The radio broadcast can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1230 and 1320 beginning at 5:30. The radio broadcast will also air live worldwide on Lehigh’s web site at lehighsports.com.
