Feb. 11, 2005
Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State wrestling team (7-10, 0-6 Big Ten) continued its challenging Big Ten schedule Friday, dropping a 32-6 decision at No. 5 Michigan (12-3-1, 4-0-1) at Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wolverines served as the fourth consecutive ranked opponent for Ohio State and seventh in the Buckeyes’ last nine matches.
The match between the Buckeyes and Wolverines Friday was carried by College Sports Television and will be aired via a tape-delayed broadcast at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. The dual is scheduled to run four additional times through Feb. 27. Please visit www.cstv.collegesports.com for listings.
The night started with a pair of ranked wrestlers facing off at HWT in Ohio State’s No. 20 Kirk Nail (Fr., Hilliard, Ohio) and UM’s No. 3 Greg Wagner. Nail allowed Wagner takedowns in the first and third periods before falling by a 4-1 count as the Wolverines claimed a 3-0 lead.
After another Michigan decision victory at 125, Ohio State’s T.J. Enright (Fr., Galloway, Ohio), ranked as high as 16th in the country at 133 pounds, bested Wolverine Craig Gilson by a score of 7-1. Enright wasted little time, scoring a takedown midway through the first period. He added a reversal in the second and benefited from two stalling penalties on Gilson to cruise to his 27th win on the year and cut Michigan’s lead to 6-3.
Unfortunately, Enright’s win would be Ohio State’s last for the next five matches. Michigan posted decisions at 141 and 149 before upping its lead to 22-3 with a major decision at 157 and a fall at 165. The UM victories at 141, 157 and 165 all came from wrestlers ranked in the national Top 5 in their respective weight classes. At 141, No. 5 Josh Churella downed Ohio State’s Jason Johnstone (Fr., Massillon, Ohio), 11-4. In the 157 match, former national champion and No. 1-ranked Ryan Bertin scored the major over Ohio State freshman Keegan Mueller (Dallas, Texas) before Ryan Churella, the second-rated wrestler at 165, pinned Vogel at the 4:36 mark.
The Michigan win streak continued through the 174 match, where 14th-ranked Nick Roy topped OSU’s Nathaniel Augustson (Jr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) with a 12-4 major decision for a 26-3 Wolverine advantage.
Ohio State’s Alex Picazo (So., Grandview, Ohio) halted the Michigan string at five matches with a comeback, 7-6 decision over Josh Weitzel at 184. After relinquishing a Weitzel takedown in the first period, Picazo scored one of his own in the second stanza to tie the match at 2-2, but allowed a pair of Weitzel escapes to trail, 4-2, seconds into the final period. In the last minute of regulation, Picazo mounted a furious rally with two takedowns and a nearfall count to emerge with the decision win.
Trailing 26-6, Ohio State’s J.D. Bergman (So., Oak Harbor, Ohio), ranked fourth in the country, was pinned by Wolverine Willie Breyer at the 3:36 mark. Bergman scored a takedown in the first period to take a 2-1 lead into the second period before Breyer recorded the fall and the 32-6 Michigan win.
Ohio State travels to Minnesota to wrestle the No. 10 Golden Gophers at 3 p.m. The match also is scheduled for television coverage, provided live by Fox Sports/ Minnesota.
