Minnesota Contingent Disappointed Not to Be Finalist City to Host NCAA Wrestling Championships

University of Minnesota officials expressed disappointment this week after learning that Minneapolis was not selected as a finalist city to host the 2008, 2009 or 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The NCAA recently notified the more than dozen schools and cities who presented proposals of their decision to either reject their bid, or move forward to the final stages of the selection process. While a list of cities who have moved forward has not been released, St. Louis officials issued a press release earlier this week stating they had made it to the final selection stages.
The Minnesota contingent put together a proposal to host the Championships at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. Pending on demand, the Metrodome would have been set up to accommodate 18,000, 21,000 or 25,000 fans. The remaining space would have been closed off with drapes, similar to the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, which hosted the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in May. The Target Center in Minneapolis and Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul were not viable options because they did not have the suggested minimum 200-by-100 square-feet of floor space available.
