From John Austin Holgate/Stanford Sports Information
Cal Poly brought a depleted squad north to Palo Alto in the second to last dual of the season, as Stanford won the dual 23-14. Stanford won five matches and earned a forfeit to take the win. Nathan Peterson and Matt Gentry recorded major decisions.
To open the match, Nathan Peterson (125) had a near fall in the first period to open up a big lead over Cal Poly’s Josh Obregon, who was wrestling in his first collegiate match. Peterson scored three takedowns, including one at the buzzer, to win the major decision, 11-3.
In his first action of the season, sophomore Josh Brown lost a major decision to Eric Melgares, 12-3. Eric’s twin brother, Evan, did not fare as well against Rafael Chavez at 141 pounds. Chavez scored two takedowns and had several impressive moves to win the 5-3 decision.
Also wrestling in his first match of the season, Zack Hensley started at 149 pounds in place of Josh Zupancic, who was out with a virus. Hensley lost the match 20-6 to Dave Roberts. Matt Gentry got Stanford back on track with six takedowns, winning a 14-6 major decision over T.J. Ferguson.
Scott Loescher (165) scored a narrow decision over Steve Gee, winning 8-7 after earning a point for riding time. Imad Kharbush likewise recorded a decision, 5-1, over Yuri Kalika. Brennan Corbett then won a forfeit at 184 pounds to clinch the victory for the Cardinal.
Stanford wrestles against UC Davis on Saturday at 7:00 at Burnham Pavilion in the final dual of the season. Come catch the Cardinal before they head to San Luis Obispo for the Pac-10 Tournament.
