Jermaine Thompson Named MAC Wrestler of the Week
Eastern Michigan University sophomore Jermaine Thompson has been selected as the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week. The 141 pound Eagle scored a major decision in the final match to give EMU a 20-19 victory over MAC foe Buffalo Saturday at Bowen Field House. With his team down 19-16, Thompson scored his first takedown over the Bulls’ Patrick Lloyd barely 5 seconds into the match and was never headed in a dominating 14-4 victory. Thompson’s performance gave the Eagles the margin of victory in Eastern’s first conference win since 1996. Junior Chad Roush gave EMU 6 points to begin the match with a pin. The other EMU points were scored by seniors Ed Magrys and J. J. Holmes, and junior Charlie Walker.
Thompson is from Akron, Ohio and was an Ohio State Champion at Kenmore High School under his head coach and father Mose Thompson. After a redshirt year, Thompson placed 4th in last year’s MAC championships and finished with a 20-10 record. He sat out the first semester of this year but has come on strong and is currently ranked 15th in the nation with a 14-4 record.
