Stanford, Calif. – Three months into the season, Stanford wrestling finally had a chance
to show off their skills to fans in Pac-10 dual competition.
Unfortunately, the Cardinal wasn’t able to thrill the crowd as they’d
hoped, although the fans on hand were treated to some tightly
contested matches. In the end, however, it was Fresno State that
came away with a hard-fought 25-12 win in Burnham Pavilion.

Freshman Rafael Chavez (141) took advantage of a rare dual start and
got things rolling for the Cardinal with a fall in the first period
against Garrett Spooner. After falling behind in the opening match,
he took down Spooner at the edge of the mat and held him for the pin.

At 149 pounds, freshman Josh Zupancic kept things going, winning a
5-1 decision over Dan Cadwallader. The match was close throughout,
with no scoring in the first period. Zupancic opened up a narrow 3-1
lead after a takedown and an escape, and scored two more points with
a takedown at the buzzer.

Defending national champion Matt Gentry got all the competition he
could handle from Jim Medeiros. Medeiros scored a point for riding
time at the end of regulation, leaving the score 2-2 after the first
three periods. In overtime, Gentry gave up a two point reversal and
could not score a takedown in the closing seconds, losing the match
4-3. This ended Matt Gentry’s school record 64 match win streak.

After a major decision by Fresno’s Shane Seibert and a 6-5 by Chris
Gifford over Pac-10 champion Imad Kharbush, the final Cardinal
highlight would come from Stanford’s Ryan Hagen (184), as he secured
a takedown against FSU’s Jatinder Singh with only one second
remaining in regulation. In sudden victory, Hagen would get his
second takedown of the match for the 6-4 victory.

Stanford returns to Burnham Pavilion tomorrow at noon for a
conference showdown against Arizona State.
