Badgers Win Second Straight With 18-16 Victory Over No. 18 Indiana
MADISON, Wis. – The 12th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team won its second straight Big Ten road dual meet of the season, besting No. 18 Indiana 18-16 Sunday afternoon at University Gym in Bloomington, Ind. The Badgers are now 9-3-2 (2-3-1 Big Ten), while the Hoosiers fall to 14-3 (2-2 Big Ten).
“It’s good to get the wins this weekend,” said assistant coach Bart Chelesvig. “We didn’t wrestle as well as we would have liked, but we still pulled it out.”
Sixth-ranked Tom Clum led the Badgers off as he tallied a 12-4 major decision win over IU’s Brian Dyer. Clum recorded six takedowns in the match, while earning his fourth major decision victory of the season. At 149 pounds, Chippewa Falls, Wis., native, Craig Henning earned his second technical fall win of the season defeating Issac Knable 17-0. Henning tallied three takedowns and 11 nearfall points.
At 165, Jake Donar earned his third Big Ten dual win of the season scoring on two takedowns, three escapes and two nearfall points to take the victory over IU’s Max Dean. Then at 184 pounds, senior Brady Reinke continued to roll as he handed 19th-ranked Andy Rios an 11-5 decision defeat to put the Badgers up for good at 15-13.
Ryan Flaherty sealed the deal for Wisconsin as he won his team leading 20th victory of the season taking a 15-8 decision over Josh Buuck.
“We stepped it up with our upper weight classes today as (Brady) Reinke, (Ryan) Flaherty and (Lee) Kramer all wrestled well to give us the win,” said Chelesvig. “We’re happy to get the win, but we’re still not satisfied.”
Wisconsin now takes a week off as it prepares for its last Big Ten home dual meet of the season when Minnesota comes to Madison on Feb. 18. Then the Badgers travel to Evanston, Ill., where they will take on Northwestern, Sunday Feb. 20, in their last dual meet of the season.
