Feb. 5, 2005
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oregon State 165-pounder Matt Ellis earned a major decision but the Beavers were beaten by No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State 40-4 in non-league wrestling Saturday evening at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Cowboys’ lineup included four wrestlers ranked No. 1 nationally in their weight class by Amateur Wrestling News.
Oregon State (9-8-1 overall, 4-2-1 Pacific-10) returns home to meet Boise State on Friday at 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum, then travels to Oregon on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the season’s second Civil War dual, presented by Northwest Dodge Dealers.
Against Oklahoma State (15-0, 3-0), Ellis took a 10-0 major decision over Brett Munson to improve to 9-2 this season. It was a nice homecoming for Ellis, who had wrestled his freshman season at Oklahoma State before transferring to Oregon State.
“Oklahoma State is wrestling with a lot of confidence right now, “OSU head coach Joe Wells said. “They’ve got four or five guys ranked right up their nationally in their weight class. We had opportunities to win two or three more matches – Tony Hook and Dan Pitsch both wrestled close matches, and Tim Norman did a good job.
At 157 pounds, Hook was beaten 12-6 by 16th-ranked Kevin Ward; at 184 pounds, Pitsch lost 2-0 to Clay Kehrer; and at 141 pounds, Norman was beaten 11-6 by 20th-ranked Ronnie Delk.
