Wrestling Wins California Collegiate Tournament
Bulldogs win tournament with 161.5 points
Feb. 5, 2005
Fresno, Calif. – Fresno State continued its winning February ways by taking the California Collegiate Tournament Title. The Bulldogs had five wrestlers win their respective weight classes, and had ten wrestlers place overall. Second place went to Cal State Bakersfield, who will visit Fresno State on Wednesday, Head Coach Dennis DeLiddo’s final home dual.
The Bulldogs most impressive showing of depth at the tournament wasn’t in the heavyweights where the team has four three ranked wrestlers, but in the 125-pound weight class, where senior Sal Gonzalez took the title and Sean Carlson was the runner-up. The Bulldogs also had sophomore Dan Cadwallader place in third at 149-pounds, and senior Jim Medeiros won the 157-pound title as well.
Among the heavier weight classes, the Bulldogs were also successful. Sophomore Shane Seibert finished in third at 165-pounds, and freshman Chris Gifford won the 174-pound title.
Jatinder Singh would place fourth at 184-pounds, and 197 would be the second class where the Bulldogs would have two top finishers, as Sandeep Singh, in a rare appearance, placed fourth and Marcio Botelho won the division.
Clint Walbeck continued to be in dominating form at heavyweight, pinning three opponents in the first round on his way to the Heavyweight championship at the tournament.
The Bulldogs return to Fresno for their last home dual of the season, against Cal State Bakersfield. That match begins at 7 p.m., and will be held at the North Gym on the Fresno State campus.
